Editors and senior executives from across the news publishing industry have met with Lord Hunt today to discuss Lord Justice Leveson’s proposals for media regulation.

A statement made to the press today by Paul Vickers, chairman of the Industry Implementation Group, said: “The industry continues to make solid progress in establishing a tough, independent regulator that will protect the public and that is also compliant with Lord Justice Leveson’s principles.”

Vickers added that over Christmas national and regional newspapers and magazines had “conducted a consultation exercise on the contract which will legally underpin the new regulator to give it real teeth”.

According to Vickers a new system will be “up and running as soon as possible” as the industry makes continued efforts to liaise with Parliament to bring Leveson’s principles into practice.
