Sony has announced its intention to give the likes of Apple and Samsung a run for their money in the smartphone sector with the launch of a new line of handsets utilising Google’s Android operating system.

The devices are expected to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week with one of the devices thought to sport a five-inch screen, bridging the gap between a smartphone and tablet.

Sony hope to claw back some of the lucrative smartphone market, valued at £93bn in 2013, having ceded much of its market share to Apple and Samsung.

The Japanese entertainment giant has reported a loss in each of the last four years and is pinning its hopes on a turnaround on its mobile division.

Sony’s rivals won’t be resting on their laurels either however with Samsung expected to unveil its long-awaited flexible screen device – although it’s not expected to be made available to the public for some time yet.
