Mystery presides over the Pope’s twitter handle, just hours ahead of a press conference at the Vatican between officials from Twitter and the Catholic church to announce his account.

The account, which is unlikely to see Pope Benedict XVI write the tweets himself, will be opened today, although he will press the send button for the first tweet, it has been reported.

At the time of writing, the name of the handle that will be used was not known, although speculation that it could be @BenedictusPPXVI which does exist and currently sits inactive without a single tweet, despite having 10,244 followers, seems a possibility.

This will not be the first time that the Pope has looked to online media to broadcast his messages, having last year sent the first tweet from the Vatican news website’s twitter account @news_va_en on its launch.

In it he wrote: “Dear friends, I just launched News.va. Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI.”
