A spokesman for the Prime Minister has confirmed that he will meet editors and newspapers owners next week to discuss the recommendations published by Lord Judge Leveson .

In the meeting, taking place on Tuesday, David Cameron will press for a timeframe for the establishment of a new independent press watchdog.

This news has come after nearly 100,000 people signed a petition directed at Mr Cameron, Mr Clegg and Mr Miliband.

The petition asked for the three leaders to work together to “implement, as soon as possible, the recommendations of the Leveson Report in full. Ignore pressure from media barons and introduce legally-backed regulation, independent of politicians and the press. Place tighter limits on how much of our media an individual is allowed to own, and promote investigative journalism through effective public interest defences.”

Culture minister Maria Miller will host the meeting and Lord Hunt of Wirral, the chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, who will also attend. He told The Times: "there's an awful lot we can agree on and I have suggested to the industry (that we) all read the report, digest it and seek out the common ground and unite with one voice.”
