Rangers FC are believed to be in negotiations with Sports Direct and Newcastle United FC owner Mike Ashley over the rights to rename Ibrox Stadium.

The proposed deal, claims the Scotsman, would see Ibrox become the Sports Direct Arena.

A statement released by Rangers owner Charles Green suggests he is open to the idea of rebranding Ibrox for the “commercial benefit” the cash-strapped Scottish club.

Rangers fans, however, fiercely proud of the stadium’s 113 year history, seem likely to resist any attempt to rename their home ground.

The move comes a month after Newcastle United FC’s ground – renamed as Sports Direct Arena in 2011 – reverted back to its historic name of St. James’ Park, following a backlash from fans.
