Bruce Malcolm, chief operating officer for BBC Scotland, has been appointed to lead the corporation's coverage of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In an email sent to BBC employees, which has been seen by The Drum, the director of BBC Scotland Ken MacQuarrie said Malcolm's role as head of the Commonwealth Games would "mirror" the position held by Roger Mosley during London 2012.

"His remit will include both sport and culture, and ensuring the involvement of the whole of the UK in the events of 2014. He will advise both the Director General and the BBC’s multi-genre Commonwealth Games production teams in the run-up and during the showpiece event," MacQuarrie wrote.

Malcolm will bring together BBC Scotland, BBC Sport, BBC News, BBC Worldwide and other divisions in delivering coverage in the build up to, and during, the Games in less than two years.

"Bruce has been with BBC Scotland for over 20 years, and has been Chief Operating Officer since 2006. He will start the new role with immediate effect and arrangements to cover his existing duties will be confirmed in due course," concluded MacQuarrie.
