Facebook is trialing a free WiFi offer for local businesses who first check-in to the service, allowing anyone with a Facebook account to surf the web for free.

The only requirement on those taking part in the offer is that they be first routed to their Facebook homepage, in addition to supplying a host of location specific data which can be harnessed to target ads and promotions to mobile devices.

Those unwilling to check-in do have the option of applying for a password to take advantage of the WiFi offer without any catches.

Facebook says the initiative is currently being trialled amongst a ‘few’ local businesses but may expand the scope of their service if it proves to be a success.

A spokesperson told CNET: “When you access Facebook Wi-Fi by checking in, you are directed to your local business's Facebook Page. Some stores may also offer deals or specials when you check in.”

At the time of writing it is thought that the test is only taking place in the US.
