The BBC’s inquiry into the practices of the late DJ and television presenter Jimmy Savile while employed by the corporation will begin today.

Led by Dame Jane Smith, the investigation will look into the culture at the broadcaster during the decades that Savile worked there, during which time he has been accussed of conducting hundreds of counts of sexual misconduct.

It has been claimed that many incidents took place on BBC premises while Savile was employed by the corporation, working across the country.

Other personalities are now also thought to be ready to be interviewed by police in relation to their own investigation into the claims.

Dame Smith will also consider the policies around child protection and whistle blowing at the BBC and whether they are robust.

Yesterday former rock star Gary Glitter was bailed by police in connection with the Savile police investigation.
