In a final drive to get more young people to vote, Obama's campaign team released an ad featuring American TV star Lena Dunham, suggesting voting for the first time was like losing your virginity.

Durham opens the ad with the ambiguous line: “Your first time shouldn’t be with just anybody. You want to do it with a great guy.”

She then goes on to say: “Someone who really cares about and understands women.”

It is only 20-seconds in when Durham says, “A guy who wants to bring the troops out of Iraq” that the audience realises she is in fact not talking about losing her virginity but rather voting for Obama.

The video was revealed on Thursday, with some critics quick to dub the ad as crude and offensive to women.
