Breakingviews, which was acquired by Reuters in 2009, aims to report worldwide financial news as it breaks, and see Cox take on the role from the beginning of next year, with founder and editor Hugo Dixon set to become editor-at-large of Reuters News.

Dixon, who founded the company in 1999, will also write a weekly column as part of his new role.

Cox, a founding editor and currently Amercias editor of Breakingviews, will lead a team financial columnist across New York, London, Hong Kong, Beiging, Singapore, Washington and Dubai.

"I have been privileged to work alongside Hugo, one of the most astute financial journalists of his generation," said Cox. "Along with the peerless Breakingviews editorial team, I relish the opportunity of continuing to make Breakingviews the global leader in agenda-setting, financial commentary."
