The Prime Minister has joined twitter via @david_cameron, gaining nearly 70,000 followers in a matter of hours.

His first tweet read: "I'm starting Conference with this new Twitter feed about my role as Conservative Leader. I promise there won't be 'too many tweets...'” and has so far seen 668 users retweet.

However, Cameron also received a torrent of unwelcoming messages with some followers attacking his government’s policies while others mocked his ‘colourful’ language.

High profile twitter users also took to site to ridicule the PM, such as John Prescott who said: “How to you beat bubble blast pack 4 level 45 on Angry Birds?” amongst a host of other scathing tweets, and Labour MP

Amanda who asked: “Dave. I wonder if you could tell me which wine goes best with roast swan? Cheers #askdave”

TV writer Roland Moore also commented: “"I promise there won't be 'too many tweets.' > Mind you, you also promised you'd cut the deficit not the NHS," and then tweeted about his increase in followers after the mocking tweet.

His latest tweet came this morning where he spoke of his appearance on the Andrew Marr show: “I’ll be explaining how we’re on the side of people who want to get on with life.”
