Nike has accepted the ASA’s decision over the banning of Wayne Rooney’s tweets as part of its Make It Count campaign earlier this year.

Last week, an Independent Reviewer upheld the ASA’s original decision to ban the tweets by the Manchester United and England striker following the initial ruling in June.

The tweets were a part of Nike’s Make it Count campaign, one of which read; "My resolution – to start the year as a champion, and finish it as a champion….#makeitcount gonike.me/makeitcount" was not a clearly market piece of marketing communications.

Should Nike have wished to continue to appeal, it was faced with turning to a judicial review in order to do so, however, the brand has informed The Drum that it now accepts the decision.

A spokesperson for Nike, told The Drum; “As stated in the past, we believed the tweets were clearly identifiable as part of Nike's Make it Count campaign and it was never our intention to mislead consumers. We welcome the ASA's evolving guidance on the use of twitter in marketing campaigns and accept their final decision on this matter.”
