Two former News International journalists, including the former editor of the Scottish News of the World, were arrested yesterday as part of separate police inquiries.

Bob Bird, who edited the News of the World in Scotland until it closed last year, was arrested by Strathclyde Police yesterday in connection with the Tommy Sheridan defamation action, and released after being charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Bird was arrested following the defamation case brought against the News of the World by former MSP Tommy Sheridan, which saw him awarded £200,000. Sheridan was later jailed for three years after being convicted of perjury.

Bird gave evidence during the original defamation trial, as well as Sheridan’s perjury trial, that also saw News of the World editor Andy Coulson face questions. He too has since been charged as a result of the evidence he gave.

Meanwhile, former journalist for The Times, Patrick Foster was also arrested, by Scotland Yard, as part of Operation Tuleta. He is the 11th person to be arrested as part of the investigation, and was questioned under the Computer Misuse Act over computer hacking allegations.

Foster is understood to have left The Times last year.
