Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has mounted a last ditch desperate attempt to evade extradition to Sweden by holing up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Assange is wanted by officials in Sweden to answer questions relating to an alleged rape and sexual assault committed in the country but fears that America could be the inevitable end game of his legal battle – where he could face the death penalty over for espionage and sedition over the dissemination of confidential material on Wikileaks.

The UK Foreign Office confirmed that Assange was now “beyond the reach of the police” but confirmed it was working with Ecuadorian officials to resolve the problem.

Ecuador has pledged to protect Assange pending a review of his asylum application and will consult the UK, Swedish and American authorities on the matter.
