Ramsgate has been forced to withdraw its image of the Kray Twins on its pump clip for its beer brand Dark Conspiracy, after it was deemed to suggest violence and aggression.

The Portman Group investigated the claim following a complaint from a visitor to the brewery’s website.

Ramsgate said the name was chosen to reflect both the style and origin of the beer and the illustration reflected some element of the name and character of the beer.

The Portman Group said it had no objection to the name of the beer, but thought that the violence of the Kray Twins meant that consumers would associate the brand with violence and aggression, making the image in breach of paragraph 3.2b of the code of practice.
