Cineworld is to expand its revenue sharing agreement with the opening of up to five new IMAX theatre systems set to open over the next 12 months.
The agreement will see three IMAX theatres installed into existing multiplexes, the first two being in Enfield and Birmingham in October, before another system will be opened in Nottingham at the beginning of next year.
These follow the three opened last December in Edinburgh, Crawley and Sheffield, with Cineworld having committed to increasing its number to six, although there is the option of an additional two being added.
This means that there will be 22 IMAX theatres at least by next year, 19 of which are currently open.
"The response from our customers to our recently opened IMAX theatres has been overwhelmingly positive, and today's agreement is a direct result of our success to date," said Crispin Lilly, vice president of business affairs at Cineworld Group. "IMAX is a key differentiator for our multiplexes and we're delighted to bring the unique, premium, immersive cinematic experience that only IMAX delivers to a wider audience across the UK."
Richard L. Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, added: "It's great to see that in such a short time Cineworld is already seeing results with IMAX and adding more theatres to its circuit, which points to a growing momentum for IMAX in EMEA. As one of the region's leading exhibitors, Cineworld is an excellent partner to help us fully maximize our opportunities in the key UK market."
