The Herald and Sunday Herald have today launched purpose-built apps for all Apple and Android platforms.

Developed in-house, the apps give users access to the newspapers' content on the iPad, iPhone and all Android phones and tablet devices.

The apps are free to download but users must have an app subscription heraldscotland.com, with prices starting from £3.99 for four weeks.

They will be available for free to The Herald's print subscribers.

Mark Smith, group digital director, said: "We are delighted to be the first Scottish newspaper to launch apps for both Apple and Android platforms.

"Smartphone and tablet ownership is continuing to grow fast in Scotland and as a business we are very focussed on serving our customers with products that suit their lifestyles."

The Herald will support the apps with a marketing campaign.
