A costume drama loosely set around the sinking of the Titanic has proven to be a disaster for ITV – although perhaps not as the broadcaster had hoped.

Viewing figures for the third edition of the serial showed more than half its viewers have abandoned ship since the maiden edition of the series was broadcast on April 1.

That saw 7.4m tune in to start the voyage, a figure which subsequently dropped 4.7m for the second episode before falling further to 3.53m for the latest.

It means that Titanic was beaten by a retrospective on TV host Des O’Connor which drew in 3.61m viewers in the slot prior, alongside BBC1’s Silent Witness which boasted 5.89m.

Titanic did compare favourably with Channel 4’s Homeland however, which drew 2.16m.
