Little Britain star Matt Lucas has announced that he is ditching Twitter after becoming subject to a growing volume of abusive tweets on the micro-blog.

Lucas informed his 565,000 followers that he was quitting the site after a teenage tweeter posted a joke about the death of his former partner, Kevin McGee.

His departure mirrors that of Ashton Kutcher, who has delegated tweeting duties to his media team after he became inadvertently embroiled in a US paedophile row.

It occurred when Kutcher passed comment on the sacking of a US football team coach, without mentioning he had covered up a colleagues abuse of young boys.

A host of celebrities have also quit the site in recent weeks; including singer Sinead O’Connor and Manchester City footballer Micah Richards.
