Apple will today announce what it intends to do with its $97bn cash reserves, amidst speculation that it may pay a shareholder dividend or embark on an acquisition drive.

It follows mounting concern from shareholders that the trove of cash was being squandered in the bank and would be more productively utilised through investment.

An announcement regarding “the outcome of the Company’s discussions concerning its cash balance” will be made during a conference call today at 13:00.

Apple hasn’t paid out a shareholder dividend since 1995.
