Tesco has blamed an “IT error” for an advertisement on their website which offered Apple’s latest gadget for the bargain price of £49.99.

Clubcard holders could claw back an additional 49p to pick up the device for a mere £49.50 – despite Apple specifying a rather more hefty £559 price tag for the 4G 64GB model when it goes on sale on March 17.

News of the too good to be true offer spread like wildfire amongst social networking sites as people queued up to hand over their fifty quid.

A Tesco spokesperson warned bargain hunters however that the retailer would not be honouring its price pledge, although it would refund any purchases.

The spokesperson said: "We like to offer our customers unbeatable value, but unfortunately this is an IT error that is currently being corrected."
