Microsoft’s suite of eponymous Office programs will soon be made available to iPad users according to reports in the Daily.

The software giant is said to be in the final stages of developing a tablet compatible iteration of its work tools, in the form of a new Office app which could be available in the App Store soon.

Those who have had a look at a working prototype cite an interface which is more akin to Metro, Microsoft’s Windows Phone design language, although it is most similar to the current OneNote app.

For now only Word, Excel and PowerPoint files can be created or edited with Microsoft remaining tight lipped over whether other formats will be made available.

It marks an admission by Microsoft that Apple’s dominance of the tablet market is now unassailable for the foreseeable future, effectively conceding that its upcoming range of Windows 8 tablets are unlikely to usurp the iPad.

Microsoft currently has no plans to launch a similar app for Android based tablets – a major blow for Apple’s chief competitor.
