Twitter has announced that it is launching a self-service advertising system – but at first it will only be available to advertisers who accept or use American Express cards.

Under the new system, advertisers will be able to manage their marketing campaigns and budgets without having to deal with sales representatives: they are able to set their advertising limit, pick where they want the ad to appear and write their own message.

It has been said that Twitter will only charge for ads that get a user response - when a viewer decides to follow the business, retweet the message or click on a link.

American Express will buy $100 in Twitter ads for each of the first 10,000 qualified businesses in America that sign up, with the "promoted products” ads to appear in Twitter streams from late March.
