Steady rise in digital subscribers for both The Times and Sunday Times

Both The Times and the Sunday Times have reported a steady rise in their digital subscriptions.

The Times now has 119,255 digital subscribers compared with 79,000 a year ago, while, year-on-year , the Sunday Times subscription list has risen from 75,133 to 113,818.

The publishers of the two newspapers, News International, also reported that an average of 59,882 copies of The Times was downloaded daily on the iPad - a 35% increase since last September.

The average number of The Sunday Times iPad edition downloads in January was 63,959 - representing an 80% increase since last September.

The paying digital subscribers are in addition to the ABC print circulation figures for January of 405,113 for The Times and 967,975 for The Sunday Times.

Meanwhile, Tom Standage, digital editor of The Economist magazine has reported that a survey of regular readers revealed that currently 80% of them consume the content in print and 20% in digital form.

However, when asked how they expected to consume it in two years time, 70% say they expect it will be digital and only 30% print.
