Twitter has announced a partnership with two satellite operators, Iridium and Thuraya, to introduce Twitter SMS to their subscribers.

The new service will work even if phone lines and internet access is limited, such as in war zones, allowing people to continue to share comments and news, Twitter explained in a blog.

“Today, we continue to build out SMS capability because we recognize (sic) the importance and value of making our service available to every person on the planet. No matter what device people use — from the most advanced smartphone to the simplest feature phone — people around the world should be able to send and read Tweets,” said Twitter.

A full list of mobile carriers and satellite providers supporting the service can be found here.
