The BBC today relaunches its online sports offer with a revamped presence which puts live coverage at its heart.

The timely refresh, coming ahead of this year’s Olympic Games, is the first such overhaul in over a decade and offers enhanced text commentary, audio and visual coverage and improved tables and stats.

It is intended that the site act as a platform for sports fans by offering a more immersive experience that harmonises with the simpler and cleaner format already introduced on the BBCs News, Weather and iPlayer channels

The BBC Sports channel is the most popular such website in the UK, garnering around 11.5m users a week and will attempt to engage more positively with them by offering improved social media connections.

Barbara Slater, Director BBC Sport said: “This redesign, the first in a series of innovations planned for 2012, builds on our broadcasting heritage by putting live coverage at the heart of our online output in what is poised to be an unforgettable year in British sport.”
