Outdoor clothing company Mountain Hardwear has appointed Smoking Gun PR as to handle its consumer PR ahead of a UK expansion.

The Columbia Sportswear International subsidiary has tasked Smoking Gun to work alongside the in-house PR team, which will handle trade and specialist media, as it expands through the creation of a dedicated business team, and the launch of a showroom in the Lake District.

Smoking Gun will handle consumer PR, with the brief that includes broadening the appeal of the brand away from its heritage in climbing to snowsport and alpinist sectors.

The agency will also oversee seasonal product launches, media sample service and amplification of major events and athlete expeditions.

Other agencies have also been briefed across key European territories.

The growth strategy is planned over a three year period, Andrew Barker, European brand director for Mount Hardwear, explained.

Rick Guttridge, managing director of Smoking Gun, added: “Winning the contract with Mountain Hardwear is a major coup for the business having beaten renowned London agencies.

“We’ve already had a fantastic induction into the Columbia family thanks to an intensive sales conference and product briefing in Oregon which has set us up to kickstart the campaign immediately,” he added.

Smoking Gun also works with sports brands such as the sports arena for BURRDA Sport, the Football Safety Officer’s Association, Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers and sports law specialist IPS Law.
