Disgraced journalist Johann Hari has quit his role as a columnist for the Independent after commiting an act of hari-kari late last year.

Hari, who has just completed a ‘journalism retraining’ course in the US, opted to sever his links entirely from the paper he has served for nine years in the wake of a plagiarism scandal.

Espousing his rationale in a blog post Hari said: “I’m willing to take the flack for my errors myself: when you screw up, you should pay a price. But I’m not willing to see other people, who are played no part in those errors and are unimpeachably decent people, take the flack too.”

Hari plans to concentrate now on completion of his new book instead, a topic which has already been subject to some mischievous editing on Wikipedia – “his” book?
