Midland News Association, publisher of the Express & Star, Britain’s biggest selling regional newspaper, has announced that it is taking down its website paywall and encouraging readers to purchase its iPad and iPhone apps instead.

The volte face comes after the publisher introduced a paywall in April last year which barred access to the bulk of its content, excluding breaking news, to non-paying visitors.

Midland’s move echoes that of Johnston press which took down paywalls at six of its titles following a three month trial.

Both apps provide a PDF version of the paper at a cost of £1.49 per week or £3.99 per month.
