Whilst its rivals push for compact tablet devices Microsoft is headed in the opposite direction with the launch of the latest iteration of its huge touch screen tables.

The SUR40, developed in conjunction with Samsung, weighs in at an impressive 40 inches and has been specially designed for use in shops, malls and hotels.

Introducing thousands of sensors embedded directly in the LCD screen the device can now read the motion of hands and objects much more readily, accurately calculating the orientation of objects placed upon it.

Possible applications for the $9,000 device include customising product selections in store and Absolut Vodka have even produced a DJ app which offers different drinks depending on the tunes being played.
