A passportless Canadian traveller flummoxed by US immigratuion officials has secured entry to the land of the free after showing a scanned copy of his passport on his iPad.

Bemused border staff were presented by the digital copy by Martin Reisch, from Montreal, who was on route to deliver Christmas presents when he mislaid the document.

Reisch told the Associated Press: “I thought I'd at least give it a try. He took the iPad into the little border hut. He was in there a good five, six minutes. It seemed like an eternity. When he came back, he took a good long pause before wishing me a Merry Christmas."

The US border agency has refused to comment on the case.
