Netflix has struck a deal with BBC Worldwide, which will make shows such as Doctor Who and Top Gear available six months after they have been aired on TV.

Programmes such as Fawlty Towers and Little Britain will also be included in the non-exclusive deal, which has been announced as the US video service prepares for its launch in the UK next year.

Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, said: "We are incredibly proud to make these high-quality programmes available to Netflix members in the UK and Ireland."

It was revealed last month that Netflix was in negotiations with ITV.
