The Times newspaper is ditching its satirical podcast, The Bugle, which pulled no punches in its coverage of the phone-hacking scandal.

Andy Zaltman and John Oliver, who star in the podcast together, announced the news on their twitter feed yesterday, and said they intended to continue the project through a different financing model.

Speaking to The Guardian, the The Bugle’s producer, Chris Skinner, said he believes the motivation for axing the show was purely financial.

“It's not been a great year for the company, and I'm not surprised that they are cutting costs,” Skinner said. “I think the show has felt a bit of a funny fit ever since the paywall was introduced.”

The final Times-sponsored episode of The Bugle will go out on 30 December.
