From today Facebook users all over the world will have the option of adopting Timeline, a new feature which will radically alter the look of their profiles.

Facebook bills Timeline as "an easy way to rediscover the things you shared, and collect your most important moments. It also lets you share new experiences, like the music you listen to or the miles you run".

Users who upgrade to Timeline will choose a main cover image to best represent them and this will appear across a much wider, more visual profile.

Then they can choose milestone moments - such as graduation day or the day they bought their first car - to highlight on their profile. The point is that news stories no longer have to appear on profiles chronologically and users can instead give prominence to key events in their lives no matter when they happened.

Facebook started to roll out Timeline in New Zealand on 6 December and today announced that it is available around the world. Users will receive a notification on their profile to 'Get Timeline'.
