Despite having hired the team behind mobile location service Gowalla, Facebook plans to close down the service next month, it has confirmed.

The social networking giant has hired the co-founders of Gowalla, Josh Williams and Scott Raymond, alongside other members of the team, who will join the design and engineering departments of Facebook.

In a blog posting Williams explained the move and confirmed that the data of Gowalla Passport users would not be acquired by Facebook however.

A statement by Facebook said; "While Facebook isn't acquiring the Gowalla service or technology, we're sure that the inspiration behind Gowalla will make its way into Facebook over time."
