Nintendo has ditched the virtual world for the real world as it gears up to flog copies of the seventh iteration of its popular Mario Kart franchise in the run up to Christmas – by staging a real life race.

Eschewing the CGI delights of their videogame roots the Japanese technology firm have dressed up some real life actors and created some outlandish go karts to realise every kid’s dream of pootling around the Mushroom Kingdom.

With the tagline “race across land, air and sea in the wildest Mario kart game yet”, the promotion has been devised as modern day Wacky Races and is being coupled with a social media campaign to tap into Nintendo’s loyal fan base.

Mario Kart 7 hits the High Street on December 4.
