Amazon to build own brand smartphone
Fresh from the launch of its own tablet device Amazon is predicted to be readying its own hardware challenge to the likes of Android and Apple in the smartphone market – according to analysts at Citigroup.
The bank believes that the online retailer is jointly developing the phone with Foxconn, the Chinese manufacturer of Apple’s iPhone.
Foxconn is rumoured to be developing the gadget for a one off fee prior to manufacture by Hon Hai, which also makes the Kindle and Kindle Fire.
Amazon’s Kindle Fire is being trumpeted as the strongest challenger yet to Apple’s iPad and a similar move into the smartphone market could further shake-up the fast moving sector.
Citigroup believe the device will launch in the fourth quarter of 2012 and is likely to be priced extremely competitively with Amazon willing to take a loss on each unit.
