It’s quite normal for National Rail to tweet about problems on the train lines, but eyebrows were raised yesterday when ‘Passengers are currently unable to alight from trains at Shepley due to reports by police of a lion in the area’ appeared on the company’s Twitter feed.

The tweet followed reports to the West Yorkshire Police that a lion or lion cub had been seen in the area of Shepley, close to Huddersfield.

Train operation Northern Rail allowed passengers on the train, but did not allow passengers off at the stop.

National Rail continued to joke about the incident on Twitter, replying to peoples disbelieving comments: ‘Lion, as in roar. Also starred with a witch and a piece of bedroom furniture in a previous life.’ and ‘no joke, it was on the mane line ;)’

This morning @nationalrailenq tweeted ‘Morning a roaringly big welcome to all our new followers.’

There have been no reports of lions so far this morning.
