Olympic athletes to get digital and social media training to avoid pitfalls

With the countdown on for London 2012, future Great Britain Olympic stars are set to receive advice and guidance on how to digitally market themselves after the Games as part of an initiative by Freestyle Interactive.

A team from leading sports charity the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust will be given a masterclass by the Warwick-based agency next week, which aims to specifically to meet the needs of Olympians, Paralympians and elite athletes as they transition from international competition to a new career. The Digital Marketing Insight for Sports Stars session will cover off a range of topics and will include the fundamentals of good website design, the ins-and-outs of using Search for brand awareness online, key aspects behind good online community and social media channel management, including Twitter.

The session will be led by Freestyle Interactive's Community Manager Sean Walsh and SEO expert Andy Gaukrodger. Walsh is a well known football blogger and is an expert in how sports people can use online and social media to great effect without getting themselves into trouble.

Emma Atkins, Sport Director at DKH Legacy Trust, said: “Workshops like this, led by experts like Freestyle Interactive, are a crucial element in ensuring the Trust can continue its work. We are dedicated to supporting performers as they make the move into a new career. We are delighted that Freestyle have been able to help us."

Walsh said: “This workshop should be a really productive session and hopefully lots of fun. In the world of internet some of the biggest social media gaffs have been the result of misguided social media activity by sports stars. However, for many elite sports performers digital communications, search and social media is not always an area they are entirely familiar with. Our workshop will help them address this knowledge.”
