A six part comedy series charting the life of a “Muslim community leader” in Birmingham is to become the first Asian sitcom to be broadcast on BBC1.

Citizen Khan will, despite its setting, be filmed at the BBC’s Media City studios in Salford before it airs next autumn.

Created by Adil Khan, a journalist, presenter and comic, it will chart the business dealings of Khan alongside relationship with his British-Pakistani family.

Khan is hoping to follow up on the success of The Kumars at No 42, the well received BBC2 British-Indian comedy.
