Technical travails at Research in Motion's flagship BlackBerry smartphone have escalated with problems now spreading from Europe to affect users in both North America and Asia.

It follows complaints from users in the United States, Singapore and Japan about difficulties in getting online.

Acknowledging the problem RIM said in a statement: "BlackBerry subscribers in the Americas may be experiencing intermittent service delays this morning."

Users in the Middle East, Europe and Africa have been without mobile internet access for three working days - prompting increasingly strident demands for compensation to be demanded from platforms such as Twitter.

RIM have blamed a "backlog of data" for the break down.
