A paywall is to be introduced by the Independent to its non-UK readers, alongside a paid-for iPad app and a decision to cut 70,000 free bulk copies from its circulation.

The strategy will initially focus on readers in the US and Canada, where readers will be offered 20 free articles a month, but must pay for unlimited access online.

The Guardian claims that the charge in North America will be $6.99 a month, with the paywall set to be introduced next week as the Independent’s website is overhauled.

Bulk copies are also set to be dropped, with only 10,000 copies being retained at the request of companies such as Hilton Hotels and British Airways, with the majority being replaced by free copies of sister title ‘i’ instead.
