Online advertising spend in UK hits £2.26bn in first half of 2011

Online advertising spend in the UK has grown by 13.5% this year, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau.

The surge in FMCG marketing, as well as an increase in online video use, saw online advertising expenditure in the UK reach £2.26bn in the first six months of 2011, according to the latest report from the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Display advertising grew by 18.5% to £510m, nearly a quarter (23%) of total online spend while direct response also increased through a number of social media and brand campaigns.

The UK sector advertising sector saw growth of 1.4% to £8.27bn during the first half of 2011, with online marketing taking a 27% share.

Online classified ads grew by 3% on last year to £385m, taking a share of 17% of online advertising, while paid for search increased by 12.6% to 1,313m, with a 58% share.
