Reebok has been forced to offer refunds to purchasers of its Reebok EasyTone trainers after the US Federal Trade Commission charged the clothing firm with false advertising.

The so called “toning shoes” were billed as able to strengthen and tone calves 11% more than regular trainers.

It was also claimed that donning the shoes could also strengthen calves, hamstrings and buttocks – simply by donning a pair and wandering around.

But David Vladeck, head of the FTC's consumer protection bureau, said. "There is no such thing as a no-work, no-sweat way to a fit and healthy body."

Reebok had already pulled its advertising campaign when the investigation began and has now been barred from repeating the claims.
