The longest running sitcom in the history of American television could soon be airing on its own dedicated 24hr TV channel, according to Fox.

Created by Matt Groening in 1989 The Simpson’s is now approaching its 500th episode, providing plenty of content for any dedicated channel.

News Corp chief operating officer Chase Carey said a “number of meetings” have already been held about how best to make use of the “unprecedented volume” of footage from the show.

A dedicated channel is thought to be a real possibility but won’t appear for at least 12 months due to syndication agreements with existing channels.

The Simpson’s has won 27 Emmy awards and become a pillar of American popular culture although fans have criticised recent series for losing their edge.
