Manchester City Football Club and Key 103 are teaming up to launch a competition to find the best unsigned bands and artists from all over Greater Manchester to play on matchdays.

The City SoundWave competition, which also ran last season, will give bands the opportunity to perform in front of thousands of people in City Square.

City SoundWave is in search of local bands to upload their material, along with a cover version of ‘Blue Moon’ to the MCFC website. Key 103 will select a top 10 list of the best bands that have uploaded tracks. Two bands will then be chosen by a panel of Key 103 and VIP MCFC judges and get to perform to Blues fans before each Premier League home match.

Lucy Horobin, Key 103 presenter and competition host, said: “I love live music, and our radio show has helped launch some of the UK’s hottest new acts, City SoundWave is a great opportunity to help kick-start the career of a fantastic undiscovered Manchester band.”

The competition will officially be launched on 29 October, before the MCFC v Wolves game, when the first two chosen bands go head-to-head with their own song and cover of Blue Moon. The cover with the loudest cheer from the fans will be played in the stadium at half-time, to a crowd of up to 47, 000 people.

The overall winner will be chosen by a select panel of industry experts from the five most popular bands across the season, and will go on to perform at the Key 103’s Jingle Ball Live concert at the M.E.N arena on 1 December in front of 12,000 spectators.

Last year’s winners, Coldside Generals, said: “Now that we’ve won the competition, people who would never listen to you in a million years are actually listening now and want to get involved and help us. We’ve got all the contacts we would ever need through being in the competition.”
