Navyblue MD Douglas Alexander's resignation announcement 'a surprise' to the agency

Navyblue directors are still unable to confirm or deny the current status of managing director Douglas Alexander, an indication – according to legal sources – that an employment wrangle could be playing out behind the scenes.

Earlier today Alexander issued a statement saying he had resigned from the agency following a difference of opinion over how the business should move forward.

However, sources inside the agency suggest that the statement came as a surprise to Navyblue staff, who had been told Alexander was on extended leave.

The industry rumour mill has speculated that Alexander had in fact been suspended pending some form of internal investigation. And the fact that the company has declined the numerous of requests from The Drum to comment does indicate they are following a formal process.

Meanwhile it has also emerged that Alexander’s wife – Caroline – who as responsible for running the Navyblue gallery has left the business.

Geoff Nicol confirmed: "The other board members were not aware of any differences in direction and at no stage did Douglas express to the rest of the Board his concerns regarding the Company's strategy either current or future.

However, what the remaining board members can confirm, is that Douglas Alexander was suspended from the business pending an investigation.

"At the time of Mr Alexander's resignation investigations were on-going in respect of certain alleged breaches of company procedure. These investigations had not been completed at the time of his resignation. However, the remaining board members will ensure that the investigations are completed and any appropriate action taken.

Accordingly, until such time as those investigations are concluded the Company will not be in a position to comment further."
