ITV Studios has appointed David Kermode, editor of 5 News, as editor of Daybreak.

Ian Rumsey, current editor of Daybreak, announced in July that he had decided to step down after a year at the helm of ITV’s breakfast show.

Kermode is currently responsible for the 5 News contract at Sky News, which includes two daily news programmes, short updates as well as a daily entertainment magazine programme and documentaries for the channel.

Fiona Keenaghan, controller of ITV Studios Daytime said: “With his superb journalistic record and indisputable populist touch, David is the perfect person to lead Daybreak onwards and upwards.

“He has impeccable editorial judgement and the ability to build strong and trusting relationships with talent. I look forward to welcoming him to ITV and working closely with him in the months ahead.”
