The Inbetweeners Movie, a spin off of the popular E4 sitcom, has been described as a watershed moment for British cinema after it outstripped Hollywood’s biggest guns at the box office.

Raking in £13.2m in ticket sales the flick embarrassed Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig vehicle Cowboys & Aliens, which took home a paltry £1.8m over the same period.

Moreover the haul of riches superceded that raked in by Avatar (£8.3m) and the latest in the Pirates of the Carribean franchise (£11.5m).

Analysts believe that the unexpected success of the film, which banishes past horrors such as Kevin & Perry Go Large and Guesthouse Paradiso, could presuage a glut of big screen translations of our favourite series.
