Scotland on Sunday will report an increase in sales for July when ABC figures are released tomorrow, The Drum can reveal.

The newspaper sold 48,796 copies in July this year, compared to 48,745 last July.

While the increase was 0.1% overall, there was a 0.5% growth in Scotland.

Keith McIntyre, divisional newspaper sales and marketing director, told The Drum that the increase came without price cutting or one-off promotions: “The stars aligned in July, it was a fantastic month for news. Some of it was atrocious of course, for example Norway and Amy Winehouse’s death, but they both happened over the weekend.

“The other royal wedding was a big boost for us, it took place in Edinburgh and Edinburgh and the Lothian's are about 40% of our market. We capitalised on that more than others.

“The Sunday market is in a huge upheaval, but I don’t think that News of the World readers are going to migrate to Scotland on Sunday: it will be hundreds rather than thousands. In the tabloid market there is going to be lots of gain in red tops.”

However, he was not sure if the increase would be maintained, as the newspaper is not going to be doing the same £1 price promotion this September as it did last year: “September is going be tricky, but we should be near our year-to-year in October, November and December.”
